Mushroom clouds appear as overwhelming, almost sublime formations of unsettling beauty. Yet they are the visible signature of a deadly reality: humanity's capacity for self-destruction. Images of mushroom clouds are created using technical apparatuses - they are simultaneously documents and medial constructs, oscillating between evidence and illusion. In his artistic work, Olaf Probst explores the relationship between language, writing, text, and pictorial form. Using the motif of the mushroom cloud, he is able to demonstrate how images become texts and texts become images.
Olaf Probst studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart with Rudolf Schoofs, Sotirios Michou and Jürgen Brodwolf. He lives and works in Munich.
Juliane Prade-Weiss (Professor of General and Comparative Literature Studies at LMU Munich) gives the introduction at the opening at 15 April 2026.
