Petra Amerell's abstract paintings arise completely from colour. As the main conveyer of expression, it is the colour which unambiguously plays the leading role in her frequently large-scale compositions. For the artist, the main question concerns how colours in the picture communicate with each other, and how they enhance, excite, and build tone. The aim is thus that colours and shapes result in an exciting and vibrant whole.
Petra Amerell develops her compositions directly during the production process. Free and rhythmically composed forms as well as overlaying surfaces traverse the pictorial space. The acts of destruction and surprise belong just as much to the creative act of painting as the sensuous placement of pastose spots or the application of glazed patches of colour.
The paint is produced by the artist herself from pigments and binding agents. Through the use of various tools (brushes, scrapers, or sponges) this is then painted, smoothed, or poured onto the canvas, leading to a living surface structure.
Alongside the large-scale pieces, smaller-scale works are also produced, including canvases and works on paper, such as watercolours, pastels, and collages.
Petra Amerell was born in 1962 in Munich, and studied painting at Munich’s Akademie der Bildenden Künste. She lives and works as a freelance artist, and exhibits regularly in galleries and institutions.
