Kick-Off Workshop of the CAS Research Group “Enabling Deep Earth Access”, led by Prof. Dr. Yan Lavallée (CAS Research Group/LMU).
How can the world’s first international magma observatory be realised? The CAS Research Group “Enabling Deep Earth Access” brings together leading scientists from the geosciences, engineering, materials science, and sensor technology to lay the foundations for this unique large-scale research project. The kick-off workshop will explore scientific questions, data sources, and numerical models alongside technical challenges and safety considerations. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the workshop aims to develop an interdisciplinary research plan for the group’s research year and advance the planning of the Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT) with the potential to advance volcanic monitoring and open new avenues for harnessing magma as an energy source.
Participants include Marit Brommer (IGA, Den Haag), John C. Eichelberger (DGGS/University of Alaska Fairbanks), Ben Kennedy (CAS Research Group/University of Canterbury, New Zealand), Susan Loughlin (BGS, Edinburgh), John Ludden (Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh), Paolo Papale (INGV, Pisa), Kelly Russell (CAS Research Group/UBC, Canada), Samuel W. Scott (CAS Research Group/University of Iceland), Freysteinn Sigmundsson (University of Iceland), Marlene Villeneuve (Leoben).
