The series investigates, on the one hand, how bureaucratic systems can become more sustainable, while on the other hand looking to the past: what role does bureaucracy play in the establishment of the modern state? Can it function as a bulwark against attacks on democracy? What narratives have risen historically that drive the negative image of bureaucracy and the longing for its dismantling?
The lecture series is part of the CAS Research Focus “The Future of Bureaucracy“.
