Location:

Center for Advanced Studies Seestr. 13 80802 Munich

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Matthias Kettner (Witten/Herdecke)

Chair: Prof. Rae Langton, Ph.D. (CAS Research Group/Cambridge)

Matthias Kettner is Professor emeritus for Practical Philosophy at the University of Witten/Herdecke. In his talk he explores the normative concept of a “space of reasons” which is used in philosophy to mark a boundary for naturalistic approaches to reason(s) and reasoning. Can the intersubjective, community- and history-dependent features of what we call “good reasons” be elucidated in a way that opens up to motivational and cognitive psychology? A prerequisite for this would be a reconstruction, gained from the world of reasons as we know it from within our communicative experience, of the rational activities that go into having, taking, giving and evaluating reasons. This reconstruction would have to guard against reductionism, but at the same time be empirically compatible. The lecture sketches a discourse-theory of good reasons (inspired by Apel and Habermas).
