Lunch Talk: Ontology and Symmetry of Statistical Models

Date:

Wed:
12:15 pm

24 June 2026

Location:

Center for Advanced Studies Seestraße 13 80802 München

Speaker: Prof. Jun Otsuka, Ph.D.
Chair: Dr. Tom Sterkenburg (CAS Young Center/LMU)

Jun Otsuka is Professor at the Faculty of Social Informatics at Zen University, Japan, and currently a Visiting Fellow at CAS. Statistical models, such as distribution families or regression models, encode ontological assumptions about the inductive problems they aim to represent, effectively defining “what kind” of problem is at hand. In this sense, they function as natural kinds (e.g., “gold” or “horses”), providing a taxonomy through which scientists classify objects and predict or explain their behavior. Jun Otsuka elaborates on this perspective by focusing on the symmetry of statistical models.

The research colloquium at CAS primarily addresses university members.
