Date:

Mon:
12:15 pm

18 May 2026

Location:

Center for Advanced Studies Seestraße 13 80802 München

Speaker: Prof. Joanna E. Story, Ph.D.
Chair: Prof. Dr. Ursula Lenker (English Philology, LMU)

Joanna Story is Professor of Early Medieval History at the University of Leicester and currently a Visiting Fellow at CAS. The script, art and texts of insular manuscripts have been subject to intensive study for centuries, but very much less has been said about the materials that they were made from, especially the membrane. Insular books were usually (but not always) written on calf skin, rather than sheep or goat, as was commonplace in Francia or Italy.

The research colloquium at CAS primarily addresses university members.
