Prof. Dr. em. Dorothea Frede

Dorothea Frede is Professor Emeritus of Ancient Philosophy and held the Chair of History of Philosophy at the University of Hamburg. She has held visiting professorships at the University of California in Berkeley, the University of Toronto and Princeton University, among others.

Her research focuses on the philosophy of antiquity and late antiquity, in particular the pre-Socratics, Plato, Aristotle and the philosophy of Hellenism.

In 2020, she published a well-received new translation of the Nicomachean Ethics.

Dorothea Frede has been a Visiting Fellow at CAS for several short stays since 2012. She will be back in Munich in May 2025 to work with Prof Dr Christof Rapp (LMU).
