Philosophy

Joshua Gert is Leslie & Naomi Legum Distinguished Professor for Philosophy at William & Mary College, Williamsburg.

Joshua Gert received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of Brute Rationality: Normativity and Human Action (Cambridge, 2004), Normative Bedrock: Response-dependence, Rationality and Reasons (Oxford, 2012), and Primitive Colors: A Case Study in Neopragmatist Metaphysics and Philosophy of Perception (Oxford, 2017), as well as the editor of Neopragmatism: Interventions in First-order Philosophy (Oxford, 2023). He has published papers on rationality and reasons and on color in Ethics, The Journal of Philosophy, The Philosophical Review, Noûs, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, and The Australasian Journal of Philosophy, amongst others.

Joshua Gert is a member of Prof. Dr. Markus Paulus’ CAS Research Group The Ontogeny of Normativity. He will be in Munich as a Visiting Fellow in May and June 2025.
