Julia Pongratz is Professor for Physical Geography and Land Use Systems at LMU Munich and leader of the Joint Group “Land Use in the Earth System” with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg. Her work focuses on human-climate-vegetation feedbacks in past and future, drivers of anthropogenic emissions, and advanced Earth system modelling. Of particular interest is the question how we can manage the land in a way that allows us to adapt to climate change while at the same time reduces emissions. She is a member of the CAS Young Center.

Julia Pongratz has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles, including in Nature, Science, and PNAS. Most recent research papers include 10 New Insights in Climate Science 2020. A Horizon Scan, Global Sustainability, 2021 and Global and regional drivers of land-use emissions in 1961–2017, Nature, 2021.

Julia Pongratz is Spokesperson of the CAS Research Focus Climate Futures.
