Robert E. Norton is a cultural and intellectual historian and a Professor at the University of Notre Dame, where he holds appointments in the Departments of German, History, and Philosophy.
His research specializes in European, and especially German, history and thought from the Enlightenment to the early twentieth century. His work ranges across a variety of disciplines, including moral philosophy, political theory, aesthetics, and literary history.
Robert E. Norton is a Visiting Fellow at CAS LMU from June to July 2026 upon invitation of Prof. Dr. Carlos Spoerhase (LMU) in the context of the CAS Research Focus “Scales”. He will give the Keynote at the workshop „Measuring the Past. Scales in the Humanities“ and talk about „Die „Maßstabidee“ und ihre Probleme: Ernst Troeltsch zwischen Absolutheit und Relativismus“.
