Sérgio Barbosa is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Geneva and is affiliated with the Institute of Citizenship Studies (InCite). He is also a visiting researcher at the BANDAS Centre at the University of Graz.

His research interests include chat apps, digital activism, digital literacy, AI and the Global South. He has held research fellowships at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM, Vienna), the Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS, Graz) and the Centre for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS, Bochum).

He has been a Visiting Researcher at the Universities of Glasgow, Utrecht, and Amsterdam. In his PhD thesis at the University of Coimbra he investigated the so-called Global South WhatsApp@rs. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Political Studies Review, Mobile Media & Communication, Westminster Papers in Communication and Culture, and First Monday, among others.

At the invitation of Prof Dr Sahana Udupa (Ethnology, LMU), he is a Visiting Fellow at CAS and part of the CAS Research Group Below the Radar? Messaging Apps, Encryption and the Enticement of Extreme Speech.
