Jonathan Hanson is Science Operations and Data Team Leader at the state research institute Earth Sciences New Zealand.
He holds a PhD in Volcanology from the University of Bristol.
His work focuses on volcanology, volcano monitoring, and the management of volcanological data. As part of the GeoNet programme, he is particularly involved in the collection, processing, and dissemination of data on New Zealand’s volcanoes. His work combines volcanological research with the development and management of data infrastructures that support the monitoring and assessment of volcanic hazards. His recent work includes a comprehensive study of the development and use of more than 20 years of volcanic data collected through the GeoNet programme.
Jonathan Hanson is a member of the CAS Research Group “Enabling Deep Earth Access,” led by Prof. Dr. Yan Lavallée. In 2026/27, he is a Visiting Fellow at CAS.
